Jess from Run with Jess organizes the virtual 5k race, the Cupcake Classic. This is a fun run for women of all fitness levels. There are no awards, as fitness offers its own rewards! You can run, jog or walk. As sisters, moms, daughters, friends, we make choices every day to lead our families and communities towards a healthier life. The Cupcake Classic celebrates those daily efforts.
WHAT: A virtual race is running a specified distance, timing yourself, without actually being present in a race location. A 5k equals 3.1 miles.
WHEN: October 14 – 21, 2012
WHERE: Pick your favorite local route or jump on the treadmill.
I decided to run this race during my lunch break on Tuesday. I had a little trouble with my left achilles tendon after my last run on Saturday, so I took a few days off. The plan was to see how my foot was feeling and not to injury myself more, since I’m planning on running a half on Sunday.
It was a gorgeous day!! The temperature was in the low 60′s and sunny and I just love how beautiful VA is in the fall. The trees and leaves are so bright and colorful!!
For this run I also tried the KT Tape for the first time. It was easy to apply and it didn’t bother me during running. The only draw back was that it didn’t stick as well as I thought. When I was done with my run, some ends were off of my skin, but overall I liked this tape.
The run itself was a pretty consistent pace. I pushed it a little bit, but I was able to handle it. My foot was totally fine for 2 miles but I could start feeling it in mile 3. No pain, just some muscle soreness.
I finished the 5k in 26:26 and was happy with my time and with my run.
Thanks Jess for organizing this race! Without the race I would have taken a full week off from running and would not have been able to enjoy this beautiful fall day!!
Have you participated in this or any other virtual race?

You’re 5k time is so fast! How do you do it? I’ve done the Freeze your Thorns Off 5k before. I liked it. Good motivation to post your report quickly.
Hi Jamie, thanks for your compliment on my 5k time. The main reason for improving my 5k time was increasing my mileage. I hardly do any speed workout. If you want I can help you getting faster. Check out the coaching link on website!
That’s a great time especially for a virtual race, nice job! When I use KT tape I have had the same problem with it peeling. One trick I have learned is to apply it an hour+ before your run so it has time to warm up and stick really well.
Good to know, thanks Christy!!
Sweet time!! I use KT tape all the time and Christy is right. You should give it an hour before you run. Also, I make sure the skin is clean, no lotions and shave your legs if you need to. I’ve had it last 3 days with minimal curling. I just trim the edges. ALSO – be very careful not to let your fingers touch the sticky part or it won’t stick. It’s picky!
Ohh that is totally what happened! I had my fingers all over it! Thanks
Hah, I love the name of this race. I think I would have trouble pushing myself in a virtual race, but I still wish I had time before the 21st to participate. There isn’t room for a hard 5K in my training the next couple days. :/
great job!~
i love virtual races. they are so much fun!
That’s a nice finishing time! I thought about this race, but I’d only do if for a real life cupcake. Maybe I could run to the store!
i haven’t done a virtual 5k in a while! nice job on completing!
I haven’t run a virtual race in a long time! Might be the only way to fit a race into 2012!
