Race Report: Deuce Braswell 5 km

Today was the Deuce Braswell 5 km and I was excited to run this race. Last year it was the first “fall” race and I ran a nice PR, thanks to the cooler temperatures.

My goal was to PR again and I was secretly hoping to run my first sub 24 minute 5k. My current PR is 24:24 and I ran that in July (race report HERE) on a hot summer day. Giving the fact the temperature was expected to be in the 60′s, I just finished marathon training (which makes me fast) and it’s a pretty flat course, I thought it is possible.

The last week or two I noticed that even with the cooler temps I sometimes have issues breathing. It’s not like I can’t breathe at all, it feels more like the air doesn’t have enough oxygen. Weird feeling! Maybe it is just me going crazy during taper.

Well, this morning was similar and I asked a few people if they think it is humid. They said yes, but it sounds so weird, because it feels soo good outside with the temps being in the 60′s. Mmhhhh.

I like this race, it is at a high school with tons of teenagers and a DJ and we all were happy and dancing and hanging out before the race. I ran a warm up mile and then we went to the start line. My goal pace was 7:45.

Mile 1: 7:51
I felt good and passed a few people. I tried not to look at my watch and just run by feel.

Mile 2: 7:51
Started to struggle and had side stitches on my ride side. I tried to breathe better and get it under control.

Mile 3: 8:03
It didn’t get better and I was not happy. The last 0.5 miles I thought I would just walk the rest. I had a hard time breathing. Good news is, I didn’t walk. But I had to sit down once I was done. It took me a few minutes to get it back together.

The fast runners who live in this area didn’t show up today, so my time was fast enough to win 3rd place in my AG! I got a $10 gift card for the local running store. Score!!

Here are my official stats:

I finished the Deuce Braswell 5 km on Sep 22, 2012 with a chip time of 00:24:57. I placed:

109 of 539 runners
23 of 307 Female runners
3 of 18 in the Women’s 30-34 division.

Weather on Race day was 65 degrees, 61 degree dew point, sunny.

Did you race this weekend? How did it go?

Do you think it’s possible to have humid weather while it is 60′s?

  1. Great job on your AG place! Hope today’s side stitch and breathing issues were a one time thing…great job even if you didn’t get your PR!

  2. It’s possible to have humidity at any temp. Im from the south, i know humidity. Lol ! Congrats on scoring the gift card, & most of all, resisting the urge to walk. Nice!

  3. Congratulations on placing in the race! LOVE LOVE LOVE that shirt you have on. Where did you find it/where can I get one?!

I bought an M and it is a little bit, I would suggest buy a size smaller.

  4. Great job! Some races are what they are. I think you can have humidity at any temperature. I just ran in Napa at night (relay race) and it was SO humid I could see it in my headlamp. I was cold and sweaty at the same time. I didn’t have any trouble breathing because I was at sea level and I usually run at 4500 – 6500 feet above sea level. If your breathing keeps bothering you then get it checked out. It could be exercise induced asthma or anemia. Both very treatable conditions. My friend runs with an inhaler but doesn’t ever really need it unless she is exercising. Plus there could be something in the air. Around the west here in Utah, Wyoming and Idaho the fires around Jackson Hole are making the air thick and dirty.
    GOOD LUCK!

  5. Great job!! Even if you didn’t get your sub 24, you still had a great time!

  6. Wow you did awesome even with the breathing problems, it could really be a number of factors for that, I know sometimes air quality can make it feel like its humid but I have no idea on humidy and 60 degrees :)

  7. [...] It was a good race, not perfect, but good. You can read more details about the race HERE. [...]

  8. Congratulations Christine! I know I’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating, you’re amazing!

Before last weekend I wouldn’t have been sure about humidity and 60 degrees. I ran Sun morning and it was low 40s and very humid. Didn’t expect that.
