Marathon Training: Week 9

My 9th week of marathon training was a little better than the week before, but still didn’t finish all planned runs. The good news: I got a good, sweaty long run in.

Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun
Plan Rest 4 m run 5 m run 4 m run Rest 13.1 m run Rest
Actual Rest
4 m run Rest
5 m run
Rest 14.9 m run Rest

Monday:
Rest! Love those days :)

Tuesday:
4 miles  in 36:52 (9:14 pace)

Outside run, it was hot and humid, but I just keep telling myself, this will all pay off in the fall. I found a new little road in my neighborhood and now have a 4 mile route.

Wednesday:
Rest

Just did not feel like running. Why is it soo difficult to get my weekday runs in?

Thursday:
5 miles in 50 min (10:00)

Treadmill run. I needed a new show since The Bachelorette is over. I found “Extreme Makeover- Weight Loss” and each episode is exactly a 5 mile run and follows 1 person for 1 year and shows their weight loss journey. Good show. I think, I like it better than the Biggest Loser.

Friday:
Rest

Saturday:
14.9  miles in 2:35 (10:24 pace)

The plan said to run a half marathon, but since I skipped last week’s 15 miler I decided to catch up and run 15 miles. The first 11.5 felt great, we averaged 10:15 pace including walk breaks every mile. We took a water break and refilled our bottles and after that I just felt off and we started to walk much more. It was very humid, when we started it was 100% rel humidity (at 7am). Later on it got hot. But again, what doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger!

Sunday:
Rest

Total miles:
Planned 26-> Actual: 24

Feeling:

  • Body: good, no issues
  • Mind: tired and still have a tough time with my weekday runs

Long Run Fuel: 14.9 miles in rain
The night before: Subway sandwich and later on then many snacks, especially ice cream
Before run: apple sauce
During run: pretzl at mile 4, salt stick every hour, pretzl in the last few miles
-> overall felt good, felt a little crampy in my arms and jaw at the end

Comments/Thoughts:
I was very tired after the long run and had headaches. I think the heat and the long run took a toll on my body. I rested the rest of the weekend. Legs feel fine though.

9 weeks until marathon #3!

  1. Your training is looking good! I get headaches as well, especially in this heat. Hope your work is going well. You will have to plan #4 in Southern California. There is one in June I am really interested in- Ojai to Ocean.. looks beautiful and I am driving distance to the start line so not having to have a hotel is always a bonus.

    1. That sounds wonderful!!!

  2. i do make up runs / swap out weekends this whole marathon training cycle- life happens and things come up. humidity is no fun and it does definitely drain the body quicker- you’ll be that much more ready come race day!

  3. Keep it up – you’re doing great. Just be sure to refuel < 30 min after you finish that long run!

  4. Keep up the good work Christine! We’re both going to get through summer training :)

  5. thats a wonderful week! congrats – you are doing awesome. keep up the great work!

  6. I agree with you on weekday runs, they are tough!

  7. I enjoy reading your marathon training. Looks like you are doing a good job getting your runs in. Weekdays are tough maybe because of work and because we have to take care of “life” around us. Hang in there. And drink lots of water when u are out there running. The heat and dehydration are likely the reasons why you have a headaches after that long run. I know those give me headaches too. Can’t wait to see how this week is holding out for you.

  8. The heat makes it tough! I try to run more by effort than to think about my pace as much as usual. Looks like a great week of running for you!

  9. Good job. I noticed that you had pretzels on your long run. I’m going to try that! Maybe on my long bike too.

    1. Yes, the pretzls are good to make sure I get enough salt but also to stop me from starving :)
