I know the heat sucks and running is miserable right now. Tomorrow we are expecting another 100+ degree day here in VA. Unfortunately, we can not change the weather, but we can change the way we think. At the end of the day, we have 2 choices:
Choice #1: Complain about it all the time and feel awful
or
Choice #2: Suck it up and do the best we can do about it

My “it’s freaking hot and humid outside” face
I decided to go with the 2nd choice and the best way to trick my mind is to make a list with reasons why running in the summer is AWESOME:
1. There is no guessing in regards to which clothes to wear, you know to wear the least amount possible -> less stress preparing for the run and less laundry!
2. Running in the heat will teach your body to work more efficient and therefore makes you a stronger runner
3. A cold drink/smoothie after a run tastes soo much better in the summer. I really like Starbuck’s Iced Caramel macchiato! Mmhh!
4. You sweat a lot – your friends and neighbors will think you are hard core for running during the summer
5. You see hopefully good looking guys running without shirt
6. You run very early in the morning, which means you have more time during the day to have fun!
7. Water melon tastes the best after a hot, humid race!

Tell me, why do you LOVE running in the summer?

I pick choice #2…but I dont go as far as saying I love summer running….you are better than me!!
I like running in the nasty humid heat because the sweatier I am the more I feel cleansed from shedding all sorts of toxins!
it makes me feel like a bad ass
:) and like i’ve detoxed my entire body with all of that sweating!
The shower after feels so awesome cold!
I tried #1 and that didn’t work very well. Trying option #2 now
Cold orange slices are awesome after a summer run!
Daylight! I can run really in the morning to avoid the heat and still have mostly daylight not pitch black like the winter!
OHH that is a really good point!
reason #2 is what motivates me!
Good list Christine! Another reason…all this running in the heat will pay off when the temps cool in the fall just in time for racing!
no sucking it up here, I very much dislike this weather and when the temps are over 105 for days on end I just cant help but cry!! haha. Instead I am focusing on weights and minimal running! We do go back down to 100 on Friday before climbing up to 110 over the weekend, maybe I will venture out then!
EVerything is better in the summer in Oregon. I like sweating and cleansing out all my pores! But it doesn’t get too terribly hot here so it is actually perfect!
