Marathon Training: Week 5

My 5th week of marathon training was good. I got all my training runs in, even though I had a little motivation issue mid-week. I’m feeling great and my long run went well. Yeah!

Rest 3 m run 12 m run 6 m run

Monday:
3 miles in 26:56 (8:59 pace)

I tried new shoes (Brooks Defyance 5) and LOVED them. They felt good and very light! I think I found my new shoe! But before I make the finale decision I want to run a longer run. Today’s run was good. I run outside and even though I tried to slow down, I ran negative splits (9:20, 8:52, 8:44). It was in the low/mid 80′s but the light wind helped to cool it down a little.

Tuesday:
6 miles in 56:40 (9:27 pace)

What a perfect day to run! I chose a nice route close by work through a really fancy neighborhood. High 70′s and a breeze felt so good! I tested the Brooks PureCadence and like them. The first 3 miles were perfect but then I could feel a little soreness. Once I slowed down a little it felt better. Great run which made me feel good and happy.

Wednesday:
Rest

Oops! It was my off day and I didn’t run. I felt a little guilty, but I got many things around the house done, so still success. Plus I got this new baby!

Thursday:
Rest

Another ooops! Instead of running I was dreaming and thinking about the Olympic Games (HERE)

Friday:
3 miles in 30 min (10:00 pace)

Back on track! I finally ran and felt better. Since we had a heat record of 104F, I decided to run inside and it was a great run, felt easy. Friday was a great day and you can read more about it HERE.

Saturday:
9 miles with the group in 1:33 (10:19 pace)
3 miles on the TM 30 min (10:00 pace)

Great run with the group. It was humid and hot (high 70′s and mid 80′s) but it was doable and I was happy how good I felt. I could have ran for longer! We had pretty bad storms Friday night and we saw many trees down but this one was the worse. It removed the sidewalk like it was nothing.

The group did 9 miles so I ran with them, had my morning smoothie and then went home and added on 3 miles on the treadmill. The first one was a little tough but then I got back in the groove and watched The Bachelorette.

Sunday:
6 miles in 1:03 (10:30 pace)

Recovery run on the treadmill in the cool basement while watching The Bachelorette. I felt great the whole time and enjoyed watching tv. This is my first 30 mile week this year and I feel good. I enjoy my marathon training a lot this year, especially since I see so much progress compared to last year!

Total miles:
Planned 24-30 -> Actual: 30

Feeling:
Great, not tired at all! Also very happy how strong I felt during the long run. My body handles the hot and humid weather much better this year.

Aches and Pains:
Ache on my right shin, started after 2 rest days. The good thing, it doesn’t hurt while running but I can feel it when I walk. Nothing bad, just keep icing it.

Long Run Fuel: 9 miles in humid hot weather (70-80′s)
The night before: dinner + pack of salt pretzels
Before run: apple sauce
During run: Vitamin water only
-> felt great!

Comments/Thoughts:
Another massage this Sunday! LOVE!

13 weeks until marathon #3!
