Grouptastic Run and a hurt-so-good Massage

Group Run Saturday!

That’s one of the best parts of the week and I was looking forward to running with my running buddies and my first double digit run since early March.

It was perfect weather for a long run, cloudy and mid 40′s at the start and low 50′s at the finish. In preparation for an upcoming half marathon, we did a different route this morning. I was ready to go and had a print out of the race course and was hoping not to get us lost!

We started with a good pace and talked most of the time. There were 2 major hills, which I walked and since it was my first long run, I tried to keep the pace easy. I also wore my heart rate monitor and was glad my heart rate alert didn’t go off too often. That means I did a good job on keeping it easy. Once we jaywalked a major road and one of us almost got hit, not good but we survived.

Later on we made some adjustment to the course in order to avoid those main traffic roads. Luckily my running buddies live in this area and were able to find the way back. Unfortunately during the last mile one of the ladies tripped and fell. Luckily she wasn’t hurt, just a few scratches.

This was a great run! However, I was glad when we were don. I felt the little faster pace, plus I knew I had a massage coming up!

I recently purchased a Groupon for a 1 hour massage at the Spiral and Injury Center and was looking forward to a good massage. When I arrived there, my boyfriend just finished up his massage. He left to do a little shopping while I got my massage. Initially it was a little creepy since they opened the office just for us and once my BF left, it was just me and the massage therapist (male) behind locked doors!

After the initial shock, I was fine though. He was a nice guy and did a really good head massage (for stress and headaches). Then he focused on my hips and glutes. He started with some stretches and found some really tough spots. Lately I felt really good with my hips and thought I’m fine. I guess I was wrong. When he hit those spots, I was in pain!

My right hip flexor was a little tight, but man, once he worked my left hip, it was soo tight and painful! He suggested to ice/heat every day for1 week and also to take epson salt baths. He also suggested to drink more water. This is tough for me, but I really have to work on that.

I really enjoyed this visit and now I feel good! I usually get a massage at a local massage place, that feels good but they never go so deep into my hips/glutes. Unfortunately today’s place has difficult opening hours for me, but I can really recommend getting your massage at a chiropractor/physical therapist office. They really know what they are doing and you can really benefit from a “it hurts so good” massage!

Do you visit a chiropractor or physical therapist on a regular basis?
How do you stay injury-free?

  1. a good sports chiropractor is a lucky find. I think it is so neat that they can have you move/stand etc and know so much about your body!
